“Tell me more about you.”
I’m curled up against his side as we lie in bed. My head rests on his chest, his fingers toying lazily with my hair, lulling me into a relaxed state.
Before I can answer, Jude lets out a grunt of dismay. “Fuck. I’m doing it all backward,” he mutters under his breath.
This just makes him that much more endearing, which is a characteristic at odds with his intimidating appearance and the fact this man is well over six feet of lean muscle.
I mull over his response and realize he is accurate. We don’t know each other’s favorite color, food, movie, or book. Whether we’re ticklish or not. We’ve gone about this a bit backward. We’ve still covered important facts, though maybe not directly. He’s proven a great deal by not only his actions but also by his words—though they may be few.
With my chin propped on his chest, I gaze at him, and compelled to rid him of the unease and uncertainty etched on his features, I start with the basics.
“Favorite color is blue.” I admire his eyes. “But not your run-of-the-mill blue,” I add softly. “A stormy blue mixed with shades of gray.”
Eyes locked with mine, I desperately wish I could see beneath the shutters and armor in place instead of merely catching occasional glimpses.
One edge of his mouth tips up, and his eyes take on a sparkle I’d like to say is reserved only for me. “I’d love a crash course in all things Faith.”
The fact that he’s asking, that he’s this interested, gives me hope that there’s more between us than simply a fierce attraction.
I tip my head to the side in thought. “I don’t like spicy food, I love eighties music, I’m ridiculously ticklish, and I’ve always dreamed of living along the coast. Somewhere in the south where it’s warmer.” I shudder. “Without the bitter-cold winters like we have here.”
His expression is thoughtful. “What’s your ideal version of paradise?”
I don’t answer immediately, gathering my thoughts. “It’s probably different than most. I’d love to have someone amazing with me, have a special spot all to ourselves—nothing fancy.” I close my eyes, and I can see it in my mind. “A house with a large porch with one of those bench swings on it—wide enough we can both fit. Sometimes I’ll have my head on his lap and he’ll play with my hair. Or vice versa. We’ll talk about whatever or nothing at all. We’ll just…be. Simply enjoy one another’s company.” The image is so vivid. I imagine Jude is with me, and a relaxing pensiveness fills my entire body. I open my eyes with a satisfied smile. “To me, that would be paradise.”
His eyes are locked on me, and a myriad of emotions flits across his face. Yearning. Envy. Sadness. “Sounds like a perfect version of paradise to me.” His voice is husky, subdued, holding a hint of tenderness.
We fall silent for a beat before he prompts, “What else?”
“I strongly dislike Disney movies.
